Soft Landing

Our Soft Landing sessions are free relaxed preparation sessions for families to explore Cubbin’s shows before they come.

Got a little one who feels unsure about new experiences? Or maybe you’d like a bit of time to settle in too?

Some tamariki and grownups need a gentle introduction to new people, places and sounds. Our 30 minute Soft Landing session is designed to help everyone feel more comfortable before attending the show.

You’ll have the chance to:
– meet the performers
– hear some of the music
– explore the set and lighting
– get familiar with the Cloisters Studio and The Arts Centre, where the show will take place

Soft Landing is a relaxed preparation session, not a performance. It’s a great option for first-time Cubbin audiences, anxious tamariki, or anyone who would enjoy arriving with a bit more confidence and familiarity.

FAQ

Do you offer companion tickets? Are you registered with Hapai?

We don’t accept Hapai cards, however we do have our own companion ticket options to make your visit to Cubbin easier.

One free companion ticket is available per group booking, to support a Deaf or disabled adult attending a Cubbin show.

Companion tickets aren’t available for parents or caregivers who are accompanying a child when attending a Cubbin show. You’ll need to book a grownup ticket for each adult in your group, and a child ticket for each child. For more information and to book a free companion ticket, please contact hello@cubbin.co.nz

Do you offer relaxed performances?

All our performances at Cubbin Theatre are relaxed. Our work is child-focussed which means we aim to provide engaging and regulating experiences that are lots of fun without being over-stimulating. There is always some light in the audience, and you can come and go from the space as you need. The Cloisters Studio, where our Christchurch shows are held, only seats a maximum of 44 so it is intimate and not crowded.

Is the Cloisters wheelchair accessible?

Yes it is. There are some uneven cobblestones out the front (it is a heritage building!) and there is a small lip on the heritage door at the Cloisters Studio entrance, but there is flat floor access right into the theatre.

Our audience seating (chairs) in the Cloisters is not fixed, and we use cushions and mats for seating on the floor – all of which are easy to move. Make a note in the Accessibility section when booking your tickets, so our team can welcome you how you need.

Our friendly usher team are also on hand to help on the day.

Can I bring my things with me?

Yes, you are welcome to bring whatever you need into the theatre.

Prams will either be parked right outside the theatre, monitored by an usher during the whole show, or in some shows you can bring them into the theatre.

Food and cold drinks are fine, but we ask you to leave hot drinks outside for the safety of the audience.

Where can I park?

There are 2 free accessible car parks and a limited number of free 60 minute car parks at the Arts Centre’s Hereford St carpark. There are mobility on-street car parks on Hereford Street and Rolleston Avenue, near the entrance of the Botanic Gardens. The underground parking lot over at the Christchurch Art Gallery also has accessible car parks. On weekends it can be a bit busy so leave a bit of time to find a park.
