About the show

Cubbin Concert brings Cubbin Theatre Company’s love of music to the stage in a relaxed, joyful concert for very young children and their grown-ups.

Original Cubbin songs sit alongside familiar favourites, creating a musical world full of warmth, rhythm, harmony and gentle surprises. Children are invited to listen closely, move freely, and follow their curiosity as they experience live music and a range of instruments up close.

Created especially for children aged 0 to 7 years old, Cubbin Concert is a welcoming introduction to live music, encouraging curiosity, exploration and the simple joy of discovering sound together.

10am Wednesday, 10am Thursday and 10am Friday are Cubbin Concert Unplugged sessions: A chilled-out version of the same concert, perfect for babies, sensitive listeners, and anyone who likes things soft and gentle.

Cubbin Concert is suitable for children aged 0 to 7 years old.

No participation required: When you attend Cubbin shows, you will not be asked to be involved in the performance. Sit back and enjoy the show with your little one.

FAQ

Can I bring my older children?

Yes! Anyone and everyone is welcome to a Cubbin Concert. The show has been made specifically for 1-7 year olds but we think everyone will enjoy it! Everyone will need their own ticket.

I’m running late! Can I come after the start time?

Absolutely! You are welcome to come and go from the space whenever you wish during the performance.

Our ushers are on hand to help you.

How long is the show?

The performance lasts approximately 40 minutes. There is time at the end to meet the performers and the instruments.

Where can I change my little one?

There are toilets and changing facilities in the North Quad of the Arts Centre.

Will it be loud and busy?

Not like an adult concert!

The show will have live instruments and singing and it will be slightly amplified, but to a level that is suitable for little ears.

The concerts will be seated like a regular theatre show, so not as intimate at Up and Away, but there will be room for kids to move around if they need to (and they always need to!).

The 10am performances on Thursday and Friday will be “unplugged” so will be more suited to babies and our sensitive listeners.

And feel free to bring your earmuffs if you would like!

Does my child have to sit down and be quiet?

We’re really keen to encourage the children to respond however they like. Dancing, singing, clapping or quietly watching are all welcome.

The concert is not an interactive show as such, but however children choose to respond will be welcomed. That’s part of the excitement of live theatre and we are well versed in interacting with our audience.

We do have many precious instruments on stage for the concert so we ask that everyone keeps off the stage until after the show when you’ll be invited to come up and meet the performers and the instruments.

Do I need two tickets for me and my child?

Yes. One bum, one ticket!

Will I enjoy the performance too?

We hope so! If you have any other queries or concerns please contact our friendly team at hello@cubbin.co.nz

Will we know the songs?

Cubbin Concert is a mix of well known songs like Five Little Monkeys and Wishy Washer Woman, and Cubbin originals. Some of our songs are recorded on our Cubbin Music album and others will be new.
All our music has been designed specifically for young children and we believe that even if you don’t know the songs when you arrive, you’ll leave singing some new tunes!

Can I bring my pram?

Yes! There is supervised pram parking just outside the Cloisters Studio. Our ushers are always within sight of the prams during the show so you know your belongings are safe.

Where can I park?

There are a limited number of free 60 minute car parks at the Arts Centre’s Hereford St carpark. Otherwise there is plenty of paid on-street parking around the Arts Centre or the underground parking lot over at the Christchurch Art Gallery. On weekends it can be a bit busy so it pays to leave a bit of time to find a park.
